Building Relationships One State At A Time

Building Relationships One State at a Timenn

In the beginning of September Will and I traveled to Chicago for our national Big I Young Agents Leadership Institute (YALI). We have gone for several years now and look forward to this conference every year. We’ve created relationships with young agents across the country and share ideas, successes, failures and questions about all aspects of being an agent to transitioning to ownership to owning your own agency.n

This year did not disappoint. We reconnected with old friends, made new ones and strengthened existing relationships. In an industry whose backbone is sounded on relationships we definitely made the most of the conference. We always say that we divide and conquer and then recap each other every nightJ.n

On top of the relationship piece of the conference we attended several sessions. My favorite session is the leadership lunch. In this one young agent committees from each state are represented and share ideas on how they raise money, awareness, serve their communities, are involved in the legislative process as well as educate younger generations about our industry. The Michigan Young Agents have tweaked and used some of the ideas we’ve taken from this conference to enhance our program here in Michigan. We also walked away with their highest award….Committee of the Year!

Will and I also had the opportunity to listen to Alton Carter a motivational speaker who focused on how we need to look beyond the policies we sell and look at how we view ourselves instead of how others view us. We can’t live our lives to impress others we have to live our lives for ourselves.

We also listened to a panel of industry experts who were seasoned and others with less experience. One of the topics that hit close to home for us was how to work on your business and not in it. It is a pretty tough mindset to change and for sure is one of those things we know just need to happen. The transition is still happening for us and will continue but knowing others are going or have gone through it and are willing to help makes all the difference.n

Conferences are hard as you are up early and out late and are emotionally “on” all day and night but the relationships make it all worth it! We can’t wait for MA next year!
