MLL Cares Program Spotlight: Mitten Misfits Farm Sanctuary
Nestled in the greenery of Grand Ledge, Michigan, you will find the beloved Mitten Misfits Farm Sanctuary – permanent rescue home to senior dogs, chickens, pigs, donkeys, goats, peacocks, turkeys horses and barn cats! This Sanctuary is the August 2023 recipient of the MLL Cares: Trusted Choice for Charities program, and we would love to introduce you!
Mitten Misfits traces its roots to the 1980s, when founders and co-owners Vick and Bob Worthy began fostering dogs. It wasn’t long before people were asking to rehome their farm animals to Vick: “Most are people who love their animals who can no longer care for them. What they love about Mitten Misfits is that their animals are here forever,” said Mrs. Worthy. With her Rescue Farm rapidly expanding, Vick reached out for volunteers; today, Mitten Misfits has over 70. “We never could have imagined this level of support, along with the bonding, comradery, and healing that the farm has brought to all. I get thanked daily by my volunteers, telling me how life-changing and therapeutic working with the animals has been.”
We had an awesome morning taking a tour of the farm and learning even more about all of the wonderful work that Mitten Misfits does not only for the animals that they take in but also the other organizations that support them as well. Bob was explaining to us how working with the animals has been very therapeutic for community members who are autistic or who are struggling with their mental health as well as veterans.
The Sanctuary’s mission is to educate the public about proper animal care and welfare, as well as to enrich the lives of its residents. Their current ambition is to raise enough donations to construct a new barn, so that all animals on the waiting list can finally come home.
