Blizzard Blues Be Gone: Your Guide to Conquering a Mountain of Snow

Blizzard Blues Be Gone: Your Guide to Conquering a Mountain of Snow

Oh, the joy of a winter wonderland! Crisp air, sparkling snowflakes, and… a mountain of snow blocking your driveway. Okay, maybe the “joy” part fades a bit when you’re facing a post-blizzard landscape that looks more like an Alpine ski resort than your front yard. But fear not, fellow snow warriors! This guide will transform you from a snow-shoveling newbie to a snow-conquering champion.

Before the Flakes Fly (Preparation is Key!):

Just like a seasoned general plans their battle strategy, you need to prepare for the snowy onslaught before it arrives.

  • Stock Up: Think beyond the milk and bread (though those are important too!). Grab extra salt or ice melt (pet-friendly options are a must if you have furry friends!), firewood if you have a fireplace, and batteries for flashlights and radios. A well-stocked pantry and a cozy home are your best defenses against cabin fever.
  • Tune-Up Your Snow Removal Arsenal: Dust off your snow shovel, snow blower (if you’re lucky enough to own one), and ice scraper. Make sure they’re in good working order. A little WD-40 on your shovel can help prevent snow from sticking. For snow blowers, check the oil, gas, and spark plugs.
  • Protect Your Plants: Delicate shrubs and plants can be crushed under heavy snow. Wrap them with burlap or use stakes to create a protective barrier. Think of it as giving them a cozy winter blanket (the non-snow kind).
  • Clear the Perimeter: Trim any low-hanging branches that might break under the weight of snow. This also makes it easier to navigate around your property during the snow storm.

When the Snow Hits the Fan (or Your Driveway):

The snow has arrived, and it’s piling up faster than you can say “Jack Frost.” Here’s your battle plan:

  • Layer Up: Dress in warm, waterproof layers. Think like an onion – multiple layers trap heat better than one bulky coat. Don’t forget a hat, gloves, and a scarf. Waterproof boots are essential to keep your feet dry and toasty.
  • Shovel Smart, Not Hard: Proper shoveling technique is crucial to avoid back strain. Lift with your legs, not your back. Keep the shovel close to your body and avoid throwing the snow too far. Small loads are better than big, heavy ones. Consider investing in an ergonomic shovel if you’re prone to back pain.
  • Snow Blower Savvy: If you’re using a snow blower, follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully. Clear the area of any obstacles like rocks or toys that could damage the machine. Don’t try to clear wet, heavy snow, as it can clog the blower.
  • Salt Strategically: Use salt or ice melt sparingly and only where necessary, like walkways and driveways. Overuse can damage your lawn and plants. Remember, salt only works when the temperature is above a certain point (check the product label).
  • Take Breaks: Shoveling snow is strenuous exercise. Take frequent breaks to avoid overexertion. Listen to your body and stop if you feel any pain. Hot cocoa breaks are highly recommended.
  • Fire Hydrants: If you have a hydrant in front of your home or business please make sure to shovel out around it so in the event of a fire on your street the fire fighters can easily access the hydrant.

Post-Snow Bliss (or at Least Relief):

The snow has stopped falling, and you’ve conquered the mountain. Now’s the time for some post-snow cleanup and relaxation.

  • Clear Roofs and Gutters: Heavy snow can damage your roof. If it’s safe to do so, carefully remove excess snow from your roof. Also, clear your gutters to prevent ice dams from forming. This is where a roof rake comes in very handy.
  • Basement Egress Windows: Please make sure to shovel out those egress windows so snow doesn’t build up.  We want you to be able to get out in the event of an emergency.
  • Check on Your Neighbors: Reach out to elderly or disabled neighbors who might need help clearing their snow. A little neighborly kindness goes a long way.
  • Celebrate Your Victory! You’ve battled the storm and emerged victorious. Now it’s time to relax and enjoy the beauty of the winter wonderland (from the comfort of your warm, snow-free home, of course!). Hot chocolate, a good book, and a crackling fire are the perfect way to reward yourself.

Remember, safety is paramount. If the snow is too heavy or you’re not feeling well, don’t hesitate to ask for help. And if all else fails, embrace the snow day and build a snowman! Just make sure you have a shovel handy to dig yourself out afterward.
