More Than a Bike: Celebrating “Riding Towards Success” and the Power of Community
Do you remember your first bike? For so many of us, it was more than just two wheels and a set of handlebars. It was the first taste of true freedom. It was the independence to explore the neighborhood with friends, powered by nothing but your own two feet. It was a symbol of growing up.
Here in our local community, an incredible organization called Riding Towards Success is working to give that same unforgettable feeling to kids who deserve it most. This organization is the brainchild of Ingham County Sheriff Deputies Ryan Cramer and Billy Belanger. When we learned about their mission, we knew instantly that they were a perfect fit for our MLL Cares program and our monthly $1,000 donation.
A Mission with Heart, Founded by Heroes
What makes Riding Towards Success so special is its “why.” The organization was founded by two local police officers who wanted to make a positive difference in their community, outside of their daily duties. Their goal was twofold: to reward deserving kids for their character and to build positive, trusting relationships between law enforcement and local youth.
It’s a mission that moves beyond charity; it’s about connection, mentorship, and celebrating integrity.
Rewarding Character on Two Wheels
This isn’t a giveaway or a lottery. A child earns their bike by being a shining example in their community. Family members, teachers, or friends can nominate a child who exemplifies qualities like:
- Kindness and Respect
- A Strong Work Ethic
- Responsibility
- Perseverance in the face of challenges
Each chosen child receives a brand-new bike, a helmet, and a taillight, ensuring they can ride safely from day one. It’s a tangible reward for their intangible, invaluable character.
Powered by Community Partnership
An amazing mission like this is never a solo ride. Riding Towards Success is powered by a vital partnership with Scooter’s Pro Cycle, a local Haslett bike shop with a big heart. Scooter’s and their team work tirelessly to procure bikes at cost and assemble them professionally, ensuring every single bike is safe and ready for its new owner. This incredible collaboration allows donations to go further and helps put even more bikes into the hands of deserving kids.
It’s a perfect example of how local businesses and community leaders can team up to create something truly special.
