More Than Just Sparkle: How to Protect Your Jewelry
Whether it’s a family heirloom passed down through generations, an engagement ring you wear daily, or a fun piece of jewelry that you’ve been given or bought that completes your favorite outfit, jewelry is more than just an accessory, it’s an investment in your personal style and history.
If your jewelry has significant financial or sentimental value, don’t leave it to chance.
Get an Appraisal: Have your high-value items appraised by a professional every 2-3 years to ensure your coverage matches current market values. Your appraisal should include a description(s) of the item(s) along with the value of them as well.
Check Your Insurance Policy: Often, a standard homeowners or renters insurance policy has a “limit” on jewelry. If your engagement ring, earrings, necklace, bracelet, watch or rings is worth more than that, you may need to schedule it on your home or renters insurance. If you would like to talk about it give our office a call 517-351-9117. We are happy to walk you through everything.
Just like your car, jewelry needs a “tune-up.” Once a year, take your most-worn pieces to a jeweler to have the prongs checked. Over time, the tiny metal claws holding your diamonds or other precious stones in place can wear down or snag. A quick professional tightening is much cheaper than replacing a lost stone! Plus, they will typically shine the jewelry right up after they check it making it look just like new.
